North Carolina's Premier Fire, Rescue, and EMS Training Event
For nearly five decades, the McDowell Fire, Rescue and EMS College has stood as North Carolina's largest fire school, bringing together hundreds of emergency responders each March at McDowell Technical Community College in Marion. What began in 1978 has grown into an annual tradition that draws over 800 students from across the state and beyond, all gathering in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains to sharpen their skills and advance their training.
This year marks the 48th edition of this respected event, continuing a legacy of excellence in fire service education that has made McDowell County a destination for emergency services professionals. Hosted on the McDowell Technical Community College campus at 54 College Drive, the week-long college offers more than 70 classes covering everything from fundamental firefighter certifications to specialized rescue operations and emergency medical services. Whether you're a volunteer firefighter from a small mountain community or a career professional seeking advanced credentials, the McDowell Fire School provides accessible, high-quality training designed to prepare first responders for the challenges they'll face protecting their communities.
